Wassail poem by Adrian Mealing, Colwall's resident poet...
Gently through this orchard tread
tiptoe with your toasted bread
‘tis not a night for going to bed
gorra lorra wassailing to do instead
And fondly in the darkness feel, the apple spirit, that’s enough
Like Colwall folks, gentil and smart, and some quite rough
Be whole - good health
Cox’s, pile them high in boxes, Pippins, jeans with rippins
Spartan, I’ll take a carton, eat enough Gala, they make you go Lady ga-ga
Early Windsor? Not in my wheelie-binsor,
Pearman, have no fear, man, of the year to come
Egremont, Lord Lambourne, Bismarck & Blenheim
These are hard to grow, a bit like a potato
Be whole - good health
Our primary school, along Mill Lane
is good for your speling and good for your brain
but the Thai Rama crossing, when wet can be awful
you need wellington boots and fins and a snorkel
Yes to the sheep, yes to the horses, see the cats a’mousing
Oh yes, for our kids it would be nice, to produce some affordable housing
Blasted Covid still is here, we’re distanced and we’re masked
we stand and chat two metres apart, we don’t have to be asked
Hugga, pilates and Scrabble online, walking the countryside calms
the vaccine is coming not a moment too soon, shove some of that in our arms
The Crown Inn is closed, the Legion is rocked
The Chase has gone dark, Colwall Park is all locked
But Morso keeps going, Provisions are star
Post Office, Peter’s, you know who you are
The pharmacy’s amazing, we all owe them a favour
and Sharanjit and Aman have produced little Ava
Europe’s disappearing and that’s quite a pity
Thank you David & Michael & Boris & Priti
Start hoarding the loo roll or hold fast and start diggin’
Thank you ERG and the Great Big Bill Wiggin
We marched down in London, we waved and we sang
Extend the transition, don’t go out with a bang
We Zoomed and we Facebooked, our MPs we beseeched
It’s like Little England is now being impeached
But arriving in Colwall, the words you can’t miss
you’re welcome to Colwall, come and get some of this
And through this orchard tread
Listen, what was it said?
That farmers feel it in their bones
This ancient earth, no TikTok
Twitter, Google, Instagram here
this place called home, long may it bear
such fruit as this
(X3) Be whole - good health
